AC Not Cooling? 7 Safe Checks Before Scheduling Repair

If your AC is not cooling your South Florida home, start with a few checks that do not require opening equipment. Warm air, weak airflow, and a silent outdoor unit are observations rather than diagnoses. If cooling does not return after basic checks, stop the system and arrange professional assessment.

1. Check the thermostat

Confirm Cool mode, a setting below room temperature, and Fan Auto. Note an error or blank display. If the thermostat uses batteries, consult its manual before replacing them.

2. Check an accessible filter

If the filter is visibly dirty, replace or clean it according to its instructions using the correct size and type. A dirty filter may restrict airflow but does not prove why cooling stopped.

3. Check vents and airflow

Make sure accessible supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. If one room remains warmer than others, describe that pattern to a technician; ductwork or airflow may need inspection.

4. Observe the outdoor unit

From a safe distance, note whether the outdoor unit appears to run and whether leaves or debris block airflow. Do not open covers or reach into the equipment.

5. Leave refrigerant testing to a technician

Refrigerant problems are one possible cause, but warm air alone cannot confirm a leak or low charge. Handling refrigerant and testing the cooling circuit require a qualified professional.

6. Treat breaker trips as a warning

If an AC breaker trips repeatedly, stop resetting it. Do not open electrical panels or equipment covers. A technician or licensed electrician can assess the cause safely.

7. Arrange professional diagnosis

If the basic checks do not restore cooling, turn cooling off and request a diagnosis. A professional may assess airflow, controls, coils, electrical components, and refrigerant as appropriate; the cause and repair cost depend on testing.

What to tell the technician
